Newish New Yorkey bands (With Joel Wright)

Unlike us, housewives’ favourite Joel Wright has actually been to New York (editor/Ollie:  I actually have been John, do your research) , on his own and not with his parents. In this post the Vice contributor and keeper of his own taste-setting website picks some of his favourite New York bands from recent weeks.

Download mp3s of Joel’s suggestions here and then read on.

PETER’S HOUSE MUSIC – THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES

Peter Schuette plays in the bands SIlk Flowers and Psychobuildings, he’s a productive dude, this is his solo project electronic noodlings to a 4/4 beat. This track sounds something like a less macho, more psychedelic Tanlines. Look out for an awesome mix he’s done for the Vice blog, which should be up this week!

AIRBIRD – PART OF THE GAME

You might have heard of Games the slo-mo syrupy R’nB act featuring Daniel Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never and Joel Ford of Tigercity. This is Joel’s solo project, similarly syrupy to Games’ stuff but more song-based, like Tom Waits with a Roland Synth instead of a pump organ.

BLONDES – PARADISE CITY
Blondes make the kind of hypnotic, organic dance music that is the very antithesis of all the big bass electro-house that’s been so popular over the past few years. They toured the UK earlier the year and their performance in Nottingham was definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. This track is taken from their ‘Touched EP,’ out now on Merok and I highly recommend it.

BRONZE – THE ROUGE BECAME

Out on RVNG in the fine lineage of Liquid Liquid and E.S.G. this New York 3-piece have been going for a while without releasing too much, thankfully when they do you can expect it to be pretty special.

EXPENSIVE LOOKS – BE YOUR OWN

Another prolific New Yorker, Alec Fields makes psych-pop under the moniker Golden Eye and spaced out body anthems as Expensive Looks. Both are great, but since Secret Danger tends more to the latter in it’s music policy here’s an Expensive Looks Track.

  1. […] On the surface Nilsson seems a bit more LA than NY, running around embarrassing himself with Lennon as if Liam Gallagher would need any more encouragement. Yet, he was actually from Brooklyn. This song dates from before the glorious Pussycats and the totally weird The Point! and is a Joel Wright selection. Read more of Joel’s New York favourites here.
