TE# 17: Juk Juk, Octo Octa, Shed

Haven’t done one of these in a while, for reasons explained in the previous post. With Secret Danger next week I thought I’d pick some clubbier tracks than usual.

Juk Juk – Winter Turn Spring

All four tracks from the two new TEXT releases out this week are brilliant. Because the Four Tet 12 is getting a lot of attention already (and deservedly so) I thought I’d turn your attention to the Juk Juk release. For instance check out 3’10” on ‘Winter Turn Spring’ where an airy vocal gives way to the sound of your speakers disintegrating or the absorbing B-side ‘Frozen’ which, unfortunately, is only available to preview in the boomkat link below.

Octo Octa – High Reflection

OCTO OCTA – HIGH REFLECTION teaser from 100% Silk on Vimeo.

Am I alone in thinking that a lot of the 100% silk stuff sounds like ‘Drinking in LA’? Or am I just getting confused by good dance music coming from LA? Hard to say. Still, it’s only inevitable that we’ll soon be trying to effect a mass sing-a-long to some of the more anthemic bits from the Van Bran 3000 oeuvre.

Basic Soul Unit – Soulspeak (Shed Remix)

I cannot stop listening to this. Coming in like an almost laughably brash big-room roller with huge drums and acid squelches, Shed’s remix transforms halfway through with rays of what sound like human voices. On a second listen the track betrays a greater subtlety, or even fragility. Those drums don’t kick as hard as they first appeared to, only really coming in with a fullish sound around the 4 minute mark and the whole thing sounds as sentimental as techno gets. As Moustache Bar doesn’t yet have a 10am license there’s only a slim chance that I’ll get to play it next week. We’ll see.
